At times the characters became interesting but mainly they were stereotypes and events were overemphasised for humour so they became unrealistic. When I first finished the book, I wondered a lot about whether it was a 5-star read. There's also divorce, bullying, a cancer scare, a suicide, but these are as nothing against the real drama.

The book seems to have garnered a fair few good reviews and I am at a loss as to why. The story follows a school year as they go through their own individual dramas and the pecking order at school gets shuffled. When a new — unmarried — headmaster arrives and explains that savage cuts have to be made, vill explode with good ideas to raise money. Other parts were so detailed and unrelated to the core of the story that the reader wonders what the heck is going on.
